The Thanneermukkom Bund, also known as the Thanneermukkom Salt Water Barrier, is a crucial structure built across Vembanad Lake as part of the Kuttanad Development Scheme. Constructed in 1974 and operational since 1976, this bund was designed to prevent saltwater intrusion into the Kuttanad lowlands, ensuring fresh water for agriculture and local communities.
Spanning between Thanneermukkom on the west and Vechur on the east, it is recognized as India’s largest mud regulator. The bund effectively divides Vembanad Lake into two distinct water zones—one side with brackish water throughout the year and the other with freshwater supplied by rivers.
Apart from its functional significance, the Thanneermukkom Bund also serves as a picturesque location, attracting visitors who enjoy the scenic views and the engineering marvel of this landmark.
